How Safe to Plant handles visits, searches and saved garden choices.

Overview

You can use the site without an account. My Garden saves your location choice, selected crops and planning risk in this browser. Google Analytics measures visits and planning actions; you can turn it off using the controls below. The site loads Google AdSense advertising. Those services have their own data practices.

Visits and searches

Our server receives the pages and search requests you make, together with technical information needed to deliver them, such as your IP address and browser information. Town searches are sent to this site's search endpoint. Opening an external reference sends your browser to that organisation's site.

Hosting and logs

Hostinger hosts the site. Hosting, access, security and error logs can contain IP addresses, timestamps and requested URLs, including query parameters. They help operate the site and diagnose failures. This policy does not promise a fixed retention period for hosting-provider logs.

Stored in your browser

  • Planning risk and units: local storage remembers your selected risk mode and temperature units.
  • My Garden: local storage remembers a town identifier, crop identifiers and planning risk. There is no account or cross-device sync. The crop list is used in your browser to filter public city calendars and create calendar downloads; the garden feature does not submit that list to our database.

Anyone using the same browser profile may be able to see the saved garden. Use “Clear saved garden” in My Garden to remove its saved choices, or clear site data in your browser to remove all local preferences. Private browsing and blocked storage can prevent choices from being saved. Downloaded calendar files remain on your device until you remove them.

Location permission

If you choose “Use my location”, the browser asks for permission. Coordinates are sent to this site's nearest-location endpoint to find a town. The application does not add those coordinates to a personal location database, but requested URLs may appear in server logs. You can search by town name instead and revoke location permission in browser settings.

Analytics, fonts and other services

Google Analytics 4 loads automatically unless you have turned it off or your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal. We continue to respect previously saved choices to keep Analytics off. An explicit analytics preference is remembered in local storage for up to 180 days. The controls below change it for this browser; turning Analytics off removes this site's accessible Analytics cookies and reloads the page if its script was already loaded.

When enabled, Analytics measures page visits and actions such as town searches, search-result choices, saving a crop, requesting a calendar download, printing and downloading a growing record. Our custom action events contain fixed action names and a general area such as “garden” or “crop”. They do not contain raw search text, crop lists, coordinates or worksheet entries. A download event means the file was requested or prepared, not that it was successfully imported.

Page views include the public page title and its path, without query strings or fragments. Internal search pages use a generic title so your search text is not included. We omit referring URLs from our page-view configuration. Google still receives technical connection and usage information and can use Analytics cookies. Advertising signals and ad-personalisation signals are disabled in our Analytics configuration. See Google's privacy policy and how Google uses information from partner sites. The garden and downloads work without Analytics.

Growing record worksheet: entries stay in the current page and are not automatically saved or submitted. Printing and CSV export happen in your browser. Downloaded files remain on your device until you remove them. Only send notes to us if you choose to report a correction.

Fonts are served from this site's own files. Climate data is stored before pages are requested; viewing a calendar does not cause a browser request to NASA or GeoNames.

Advertising

Google AdSense is enabled on this site. Google and its advertising partners may use cookies or similar technologies to deliver ads, measure their performance and, depending on settings and consent, personalise them. Use any privacy controls displayed with the ads and Google My Ad Center to manage Google's ad preferences.

Third-party service settings and retention are controlled by those providers. Blocking third-party cookies does not necessarily prevent every analytics or advertising request.

Contact and privacy requests

If you contact Safe to Plant by email, your address and message are received through the email service and may be retained to handle your request. Do not send passwords or other information we do not need. Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct or request deletion of personal information.

Use the contact page for a privacy question or request. Browser-only garden choices can be removed directly without contacting us.

Children

The site provides general gardening information and does not offer children's accounts. A parent or guardian can contact us about information a child has sent by email.

Policy changes

We update this page when the site's data practices change. The date above identifies the latest policy revision.
